Welcome to Wye Philosophy

Wye Philosophy is an innovative initiative led by philosopher Annie Webster, PhD. Drawing on her extensive academic background and experience in non-formal education, Annie creates a welcoming environment where individuals can explore profound questions and ideas. Through engaging discussions, philosophy circles, and a focus on critical thinking, Wye Philosophy aims to empower participants to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them. Annie's approach is rooted in the belief that philosophy is not just about seeking answers but about embracing the journey of inquiry and exploration.

About Wye Philosophy

At Wye Philosophy, the primary teaching method is through philosophy circles,  where participants engage in thoughtful discussions that start with their own ideas and questions. Annie Webster, PhD, facilitates these circles by fostering an inclusive and respectful environment that encourages open dialogue and exploration. Rather than adhering to traditional lecture formats, Annie emphasizes collaboration and shared learning, allowing participants to articulate their thoughts while also listening to diverse perspectives. This approach cultivates critical thinking, flexibility in thought, and effective communication skills, enabling individuals to deepen their philosophical understanding while developing their own unique insights.

Currently, Annie runs these circles in three formats:

Fire Circles: These face-to-face gatherings take place around a fire, creating a relaxed setting, reminiscent of ancient tribal traditions. This format fosters a sense of community and connection, allowing for rich dialogue and exploration.

Online Circles: With the flexibility of modern technology, Annie offers virtual philosophy circles that bring participants together from diverse backgrounds. This format allows for the same depth of discussion as face-to-face circles while making philosophy accessible to those who may not be able to attend in person.

Philosophy for Home Education: In collaboration with Gemma Gear, who educates her own two children and teaches forest school, . With Gemma’s expertise in education and Annie’s passion for philosophy, this collaboration enriches the educational journey for both children and their families.

Wye Philosophy’s Story

by Annie Webster, PhD

In my early 20s, philosophy completely transformed my life. I began my degree at Oxford Brookes and felt I had discovered my life’s purpose in learning and research. I hadn’t excelled academically in school—I was the typical ‘A for effort’ student but struggled with grades. However, once I entered the university environment, everything changed. My effort translated into first-class achievements.

I emerged from my undergraduate program into an MA by research, and then into a PhD program focused on our capacity for language and human evolution. For the most part, I thrived. Yet, by the third year of developing my thesis, I encountered significant challenges, including illness and a breakdown.  Fortunately, this breakdown led to a personal breakthrough. I realized I wanted to continue my work in philosophy, but I needed to move away from the overly competitive and narrow thinking I encountered in academia. After another year, I successfully submitted my PhD and returned to my hometown of Cheltenham, just in time for the COVID pandemic.

During one of the lockdowns, I took a short holiday and discovered the breathtaking landscapes of Gloucestershire—the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. They quickly became, in my eyes, the most beautiful and wild places in the world. As an avid river enthusiast, engaged in kayaking, canoeing, and rafting, I felt a profound connection to the River Wye. Walking along its banks, I sensed a deep sense of belonging, as if I had lived there before. The river's name resonated with my philosophical inclinations; I, like the river, am always flowing and  asking, "Why?"  Within a month, I started this website 'Wye Philosophy',  found a new home and moved just before another lockdown began.

This reconnection with nature reinvigorated my relationship with philosophy. It became more than an intellectual pursuit; it evolved into an active inquiry into the life I was living. I began exploring how to align my life with my heart and achieve a sense of balance and well-being. Over the next few years, I facilitated philosophy circles with children and adults, built a tiny off-grid house (link to blog post), and took the leap to start my own business to help others discover and explore their own "whys.

Teenagers love philosophy too and discussions can help deepen their thinking about other topics at school. Such as science, math, religion, history, computing, and English. â€‹

Yes, we can do philosophy at festivals too!

Philosophy with Erasmus +

I have also run philosophy sessions that accompany personal and community growth courses. These are designed to enhance course experience and deepen one's understanding of topics like rites of passage, nature, and human rights.
